How to Winterize a Fire Truck

It pays to protect fire truck pumps from freezing in cold climates like Michigan. Any fire apparatus stored outside and not in regular use must be winterized.

  1. Open all drain valves on the pump panel. Please note that depending upon options installed there may be suction, discharge, and suction intake drains beneath the vehicle.
  2. Remove all intake and discharge caps.
  3. Open all intake and discharge valves to allow the water to drain out of the area from the valve ball to the cap.
  4. Cycle all Foam Tank Fills and Foam Pumps to remove water from pumps.
  5. Completely drain the water tank.
  6. Remove the sump drain plug from the bottom of the tank.
  7. Fasten the tank sump drain plug in compartment L1 to the upper rear wall with a piece of tape.
  8. After you are certain that all of the water is out of the truck close the valves and return the intake and discharge caps to their original position.
  9. Leave the pump panel and other manual drains in the OPEN position.
